My Emergency Power setup

Post  KK4GFT on Tue Feb 14, 2012 10:50 pm

My Emergency Power setup is not very complex at all, however it is extremely versatile and completely mobile. It consists of a 2-stroke Gas powered generator and a 12-volt deep cycle marine battery.

The generator puts out 1000 watts of 110v AC and 12-14 volts DC. The DC side is designed for charging 12v batteries at about 10 amps.

My thinking behind it is this.. I cqn run my rig on the battery until it starts to get weak, then I can start the generator and charge the battery while continuing to use the radio.. Operation never stops.

Not as quiet as solar power, but its much more mobile.. I plan to use this setup during field days and be completely independent of any other power sources. I'll post some pictures of the whole thing shortly.

And Just for laughs... This is how the United States Marine Corps does Emergency Communications. (3rd Radio Battalion, 3rd Marines)

That is an awesome setup! I wonder what those discone-esq antennas are? They look like big scanner antennas.

What was this all about? Why were they set up in the field? ...or is it top secret!?

About 2-3 times a month, the radio battalion goes out and sets up in a field here on base. An Artillery Battalion also sets up when they do this. I'm assuming the radio guys are the comms for the artillery. I don't know for sure though.
